Sitting along a small stretch of Hwy 59 in historic downtown Victoria is a place that combines southern BBQ with soul food offerings. Quenten Thomas-White is the owner and a seventh-generation rancher in Victoria County.
Among his goals was to open a restaurant featuring what he learned from the generations before him. He sold his cattle when the price was up and got to work on the building located at 611 S Moody. He looks to keep the family traditions alive with recipes inspired by his grandparents. Among the most popular is the oxtails. Once considered scraps just sold cheaply to those with little money, they have now become a delicacy. Big Daddy’s sausage is a family recipe made at the ranch in Mission Valley. They have a huge list of sides that include the traditional beans and potato salad but added a touch of soul to the menu with mustard greens, sweet potatoes and homemade Mac-N-Cheese. The cornbread is a special feature and a must have.
Quenten named the restaurant after two people that inspired him the most; his great-grandfather he called Big Papa and God who he calls Daddy. He sees Big Daddy’z BBQ & Soul Food as a place for people to gather together, reminiscent of his own family reunions growing up.
